Common Facts Printer-Friendly Version
Below are some common facts about Fox Canyon GMA:
  1. Fox Canyon GMA does not serve water to any customers, but we do have management jurisdiction over 1,200 water wells in the southern half of Ventura County.
  2. The average well within the Agency extracts 230 acre-feet per year, but only about 580 to 620 wells are active in any given year.
  3. Our management rates are the cheapest around at $4.00 per acre-foot (AF).
  4. We are governed by five Board Members who represent the County of Ventura, the United Water Conservation District, the seven small water districts within the Agency, the five incorporated cities within the Agency, and the farmers who grow the crops. Each board member has an alternate that can fill in when they are absent and all members serve a two-year term. All board members are appointed by their respective organizations or groups, except for the farmer representatives who are appointed by the other four seated members from a list of candidates jointly supplied by the County Farm Bureau and the County Agricultural Association. All board members and alternates serve on a voluntary (non-paid) basis.
  5. The Agency operates with only two full-time employees: a Hydrologist and an Engineering Technician. Both these positions report to the Agency Executive Officer, who only is available on a part-time basis. Additional employees or private consultants fill in, as needed, to accomplish certain accounting, legal or special project duties.
  6. Since the Fox Canyon GMA does not own any capital facilities, like pipelines, water storage tanks or reservoirs, we have no outstanding debt. The only "hardware" owned by the Agency is a few computers and some miscellaneous office equipment.
  7. Major projects or studies conducted or sponsored by the Agency include: several Task Reports (which detail water use, aquifer storage, etc.); a study of Greenhouse water use; a computer modeling analysis of chlorides in the Calleguas Creek drainage basin; input and financing for the Regional Aquifer System Analysis (RASA) done by the U.S.G.S. to characterize the hydrology of the groundwater basins and aquifer zones within the southern half of Ventura County; and most recently, the destruction of almost 50 abandoned wells under a Federal EPA 319(h) Wellhead Protection grant.
  8. The Fox Canyon GMA has an ongoing contract to provide, install and maintain five CIMIS-type weather stations to help farmers plan irrigation schedules and duration. These stations compliment the State owned network of California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) weather stations located primarily in the Central Valley portion of the State.
  9. The Fox Canyon GMA has updated its basic Water Management Plan each time new scientific or hydrologic information becomes available. The most recent update was accomplished in 1999 based on the U.S.G.S. RASA report, which gave a very comprehensive look at subsurface water movement and quality.
  10. For more information or details about specific water issues, please contact Mr. Jeff Pratt, the Agency Executive Officer, at (805) 654-2073.
