Below are some of the questions (and their answers) that we've received at the Fox Canyon GMA:

  1. Why do I have to apply for a Fox Canyon GMA permit in the Las Posas Basin?

  2. Is there a cost associated with a Las Posas Basin permit?

  3. How deep do I have to drill to get to the Fox Canyon aquifer?

  4. Which driller or drilling company can I use?

  5. Do I need a pump test on a new well, or only on an old well if reactivated?

1.  Why do I have to apply for a Fox Canyon GMA permit in the Las Posas Basin?

The Las Posas Groundwater Basin is overdrafted, and the Fox Canyon GMA has enacted a permit process to help control groundwater extractions and excessive use of this vital resource.

2.  Is there a cost associated with a Las Posas Basin permit?

Las Posas Basin permits are free. You simply need to fill out a one-page application and provide a copy of your parcel map with the intended well location.

3.  How deep do I have to drill to get to the Fox Canyon aquifer?

In the Oxnard Plain or Pleasant Valley area, the Fox Canyon aquifer is sloped slightly toward the ocean and exists at about 500 feet below the ground surface. Where it extends into the Moorpark area it becomes highly folded and may exist anywhere from 200 to over 800 feet below ground surface.

4.  Which driller or drilling company can I use?

Any licensed driller can be hired to install or repair a well, but they must prove to the County Water Resources Division that they hold a C-57 Calfornia contractors license and must show proof of Workman's Compensation insurance before they will be allowed to do the job.

5.  Do I need a pump test on a new well, or only on an old well if reactivated?

Pump tests are only required by the Ventura County Water Resources Division in areas that are considered to be marginal groundwater production zones, or areas not classified as groundwater basins by definition. There is no distinction between old and new wells when a pump test is requested for a project or development.
